Meet your Peer Academic Mentors in t-STEM: College of Natural Mathematical Sciences
By reflecting on my initial experiences, I see that if I, as a transfer student, were given the resources necessary to succeed, the academic and social transition to a new campus could have been much smoother. If someone had told me how hectic trying to find parking in the afternoon would be, that the shear number of other STEM students is overwhelming, or how to study for, and where to get help for classes like Organic Chemistry, Genetics or Cell Biology, I could have avoided many stressful situationsduring my first semester.
But, I stand before you today, a successful student, to tell you that there are many techniques to avoid situations. Looking back, I wish there had been a quick guide or crash course to protect me from the transfer shock that first day, something to tell me that parking on campus is almost impossible after 10:00am, to purchase new batteries for my clicker, or plan to work on the weekends and study during the week. From my experiences, I would like to help transfer students wade through the confusion that surrounds their first semester at UMBC. My goals would include the creation of success tips on how to study for STEM classes, help increase students’ knowledge of academic resources in order to help increase assignment performance, how to network by creating the strategic social groups, and how to balance student course load without becoming overwhelmed. Moreover, I am a firm believer that excellent time management can prevent many stressful situations, and that academic success at UMBC first requires building a strong foundation of scheduling and organizational skills.
